What is Spell Casting?

Spell casting is the ability to comprehend the very fabric of the world, and weave it into magical effects. These effects affect the physical world in a real, tangible way. Any time a creature creates a supernatural effect, it’s likely the result of the recanting of a magical spell (Spell Casting).

Magical Spell Types

Magical spells are divided up into many types. This document deals with Magical spells, and Clerical spells, although there are more kinds in the world.

Druidic Spells

Druidic spells are not quite the same as other spell casting types. Instead, when you learn to cast Druidic magic, Druidic Spells become attached to another tradition, and behave as if they were that tradition. Thus, you may be a Clerical\Druidic or a Magical\Druidic spell caster.

Although both Clerical\Druidic and Magical\Druidic spell casters have a partially shared spell list (the druidic part), the way they prepare and cast spells are fundamentally different. For example, a Shaman communicates with the spirits, and his version of druidic magic is very much rooted in the divine. However, a witch instead learns her spells through learning and study. Although their spell list has a lot of similarities (in so much as they both can cast Druidic spells), Shaman and witches get their power from fundamentally different sources.

How to Cast a Spell

To cast a spell, you must first prepare it into your “magical mind”. Once prepared, you can cast it, removing the essence of the spell from your magical mind. In order to cast the spell again, you must re-prepare the spell, a process which takes time, effort, and energy.

Each spell is divided into a Spell Circle. Spells of a higher circle take up more space in your Magical Mind than spells of a lower circle, and they are more difficult to prepare and cast. The maximum Spell circle you can prepare and cast is equal to 1/2 your Spell Bonus.

Spells of the 1st Circle will take up either 1 or 2 slots in your Magical Mind.

Spells of the 2nd Circle will take up either 3 or 4 slots in your Magical Mind.

Spells of the 3rd Circle will take up either 5 or 6 slots in your Magical Mind. There are rumors that there are even spells that take up 7 slots in your magical mind, but you cannot cast them without first earning the Deed Feature that allows you to take them.

Example: A 3rd level magic-user has a Spell Bonus of 4, thus they can prepare 1st Circle and 2nd Circle Spells. They would need to wait to reach 6th level, when their spell bonus reaches 6, to cast 3rd Circle Spells.

You magical mind’s capacity (the maximum number of spell slots you can prepare) is equal to Your Level + Your Spell Bonus + Your Spell Casting Ability Modifier.

Example: If you are a 3rd level magic-user, your Spell Bonus is 4. If you had an Intelligence of 15 (+1), the maximum number of spell slots your magical memory can hold is 8.

Since they have a Spell Bonus of 4, they can only prepare spells of the 1st and 2nd circles. Since 2nd Circle spells have a slot cost of 3 or 4 depending on the spell, preparing a 2nd Circle spell this early is a big commitment.
