Magic is an unknown force that fills the land of Cerrix. Many effects that cannot be explained is just chalked up to “magic”.
A magical spell (often shorted to “spell” or “spells”) is the manifestation of magic in a specific way to bring forth specific effects into the world. Magic can do just about anything, from restoring health and vigor, to creating fire out of nothing.
At it’s highest level, spells are divided into three types: Goetia, Thaumaturgy, and Theurgy. These types broadly define where the power comes from, how it is learned and prepared, and the rituals used to cast it.
Each type has it’s own rules that you must abide by, gone over into their individual areas.
Although not a division as noted above, you may see the term “magical mind” come up. Regardless of spell type, circle, level etc. a mortal only has so much essence that they can dedicated to preparing magical spells. This is mostly represented by spell circle and level, but is broadly referred to as “Magical Mind” in this document.
Your Magical Mind is your physical and mental ability to prepare magic. The act of preparing magic into your mind is difficult, but so is casting them. Magic is simply so bizarre and foreign to us, that we cannot comprehend the turmoil it takes to cast magical spell. Even Theurgies granted to people through prayer are complex, alien, and require understanding that we cannot fathom.
Spells are divided into levels. A spell level is a rough indicator on how powerful it is. The more power, the more difficult it is to cast. Spells are between levels 1 and 9.
Spell levels are different than character level.
One ability you will see listed on your Class Bonus table is “Casting Level”. Casting Level will indicate the highest level of spell you can prepare, but it may also be used in the calculations for some spells.
Casting level is different than character level. For example, a 3rd level Wizard has a Casting Level of 2.
Spell Circles simply represent a broad strain on your Magical Mind. Spells Circles are divided up into 3: 1st Circle, 2nd Circle, and 3rd Circle.
Spells of the 1st Circle do not strain you as much, and thus, you can recover spent spell slots upon finishing any Night’s Rest.
1st, 2nd, and 3rd level spells are considered to be first circle.
